Overview

Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Rip Curl' is a small-sized variegated cultivar derived from a cross between *H.* 'Sunpower' (pod parent) and *H.* 'King Michael' (pollen parent). The plant is visually distinctive for its intensely folded and wavy ovate leaves with medium green flat margins, slightly shiny surfaces, and sunken veins, forming an open mound.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 14 inches (35.6 cm), with a slow growth rate and a mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, as typical for hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings. Companion plants might include ferns, heucheras, or small shade-tolerant perennials that complement its wavy foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
