Overview
Registered in 1999 by T. Schmid, *Hosta* 'Rickrack' is a medium-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. Its most distinctive feature is the heavy, rippled margin on each leaf, which gives the foliage a crimped or ruffled appearance reminiscent of the namesake trim.
In the Garden
'Rickrack' forms a compact clump reaching 8 inches (20.3 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and is well-suited to the front of borders, woodland gardens, or as an edging plant where its textured foliage can be appreciated. The medium green leaves with rippled margins pair well with fine-textured ferns or shade-tolerant groundcovers such as *Lamium* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, especially in warmer climates, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Rickrack' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
