Overview

A sport of *Hosta* 'Abiqua Recluse' registered in 2002, 'Rich Uncle' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its nearly round, deeply corrugated leaves of dark green with wide, greenish-yellow, flat margins. The leaf blades are very shiny on both surfaces and exhibit heavy substance and puckering, giving the plant a textured, substantial appearance.

In the Garden

'Rich Uncle' forms a dense mound 13 inches (33.0 cm) tall and 27 inches (68.6 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, corrugated leaves pair well with finer-textured perennials such as ferns or astilbes, and the gold-margined foliage provides contrast against darker-leaved companions. The plant produces scapes 22 to 23 inches (55.9 to 58.4 cm) tall, bearing typical lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Grow in moist, well-drained soil in typical hosta-growing zones, watering during dry spells to maintain leaf quality. Fertilize in early spring as growth emerges; the heavy substance of the leaves provides moderate resistance to slug damage, though standard slug control measures are advisable in wet seasons.
