Overview

Registered in 2007 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Rhino Hide' is a large cultivar distinguished by its exceptionally thick, heavily cupped leaves with blue-green centers and wide gold margins. The leaf blades measure 8 inches (20.3 cm) in both length and width, are nearly round with cordate bases, and bear a glaucous bloom on both surfaces; the blue-green margin extends approximately 3 inches (7.6 cm) inward, while the bright green-gold center occupies the remainder.

In the Garden

'Rhino Hide' forms an upright mound reaching 20 inches (50.8 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its extreme leaf thickness and stiff petioles provide good substance for partially shaded sites, where the blue tones are most pronounced. This cultivar pairs well with ferns and other shade perennials that contrast its bold, cupped foliage.

Care Notes

Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf substance; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thick leaves offer above-average slug resistance compared to thinner-leaved hostas, though standard deer deterrents may still be necessary in areas with heavy browsing.
