Overview
Registered in 2004, this small hosta cultivar (pod parent *H. 'PeeDee Gold Flash'*, pollen parent unknown) is visually distinctive for its combination of green-and-gold variegated leaves with red scapes that deepen in color as the season progresses. The lance-shaped leaves, measuring 6 inches (15.2 cm) long by 2.25 inches (5.7 cm) wide, feature greenish-yellow, slightly rippled margins and a slightly shiny upper surface with a very shiny underside.
In the Garden
Forming a mound-like clump 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter and 8 inches (20.3 cm) tall, this cultivar grows at a medium-fast rate and performs best in partial to dappled shade, as typical for gold-margined hostas. Its small size and compact habit make it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. Companion plants might include ferns, heucheras, or other small shade perennials that complement its yellow-green foliage and red scapes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, this cultivar is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
