Overview

Registered in 2015 by J. Moore and J. Schwarz, this medium-sized variegated hosta results from a cross between *H. 'Katsuragawa Beni'* and *H. 'Uncle Albert'*. The cultivar is distinguished by its medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, prominent veining, and maroon-speckled petioles and stems.

In the Garden

*Hosta 'Red Rover'* reaches 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter at maturity, with an upright, moderate growth habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for variegated hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade perennials. Its compact size makes it suitable for border fronts, rock gardens, or container plantings.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season; apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
