Overview

Registered in 2001, 'Red Baron' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *Hosta ventricosa* 'Aureomarginata' as its pod parent. It is visually distinctive for its upright mound of lance-shaped, dark green leaves with heavily rippled margins, combined with bright red petioles in spring and red scapes and seed pods.

In the Garden

'Red Baron' forms an upright clump reaching 15 inches (38.1 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suitable for partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, or other shade perennials that contrast with its dark green, rippled foliage. Its medium size makes it appropriate for border fronts or mixed shade beds, though it is not typically recommended for containers due to its moderate spread.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain even moisture, especially during dry spells, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
