Overview
Registered in 2009 by an unknown hybridizer, *Hosta* 'Rainmaker' is a giant variegated cultivar distinguished by its heavily rippled, medium green leaf margins reminiscent of the montana type. The ovate leaves, measuring up to 15 inches long and 11 inches wide, feature a cordate base and dull surfaces on both sides, with 12 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 34 inches high and 58 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is suited to partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its large, textured foliage provides structural contrast. The green scapes reach up to 50 inches tall. Given its giant size, 'Rainmaker' is best used as a specimen or in the middle to back of shaded borders, where its rippled leaves can be appreciated without competition from smaller companions.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed.
