Overview
Registered in 2004 by A. Malloy and P. Bennerup, *Hosta* 'Quinnipiac' is a sport of *Hosta* 'Blue Cadet'. This small cultivar is distinguished by its blue-green leaves with creamy white margins, a combination that produces a bold contrast on a classic blue hosta form.
In the Garden
'Quinnipiac' forms a mound-like clump reaching 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom on the leaf surface remains most pronounced. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, and it pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Fertilize in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Quinnipiac' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage, though the thick leaf substance provides some resistance.
