Overview

Registered in 1999 by the Russ O'Harra Hosta Society, 'Quilting Bee' is a small variegated hosta of unknown parentage. Its distinctive appearance derives from dark green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slight gloss on the upper surface, and a dull underside, forming a compact mound.

In the Garden

'Quilting Bee' reaches a mature height of 9 inches (22.9 cm) and a spread of 26 inches (66.0 cm), with a moderate growth rate and a mound-like habit. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its small size makes it suitable for rock gardens, container plantings, or the front of shaded borders. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small hostas that complement its variegated foliage.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Quilting Bee' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
