Overview

Registered in 2005, *Hosta* 'Queen of the Hill' is a giant cultivar derived from a seedling of *H. 'Galaxy'* with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinctive for its large, broadly ovate leaves that exhibit a complex variegation pattern of dark green streaked with light green, medium green, blue-green, yellow, and greenish-yellow, all framed by heavily rippled gold margins.

In the Garden

'Queen of the Hill' reaches a mature size of approximately 33 inches (83.8 cm) in height and 39 inches (99.1 cm) in diameter, with an upright growth habit and moderate growth rate. It is best suited to partial shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its large, corrugated leaves with a glaucous bloom underneath can develop fully. The substantial foliage and thick, 22-inch petioles make it a strong specimen plant for woodland borders or shaded beds; companion plantings of ferns or shade-tolerant perennials provide textural contrast.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The large, thick leaves are moderately resistant to slugs, though standard preventive measures are advisable in damp conditions.
