Overview

Registered in 1983 by R. Savory, 'Queen of Hearts' is a large sport distinguished by its medium green leaves with broad, irregular white margins. The foliage is broadly ovate, measuring 10 inches (25.4 cm) long by 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide, with a slightly corrugated texture and a prominent, heart-shaped base that gives the cultivar its name.

In the Garden

'Queen of Hearts' reaches a mature spread of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 28 inches (71.1 cm), making it suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or color. The scape rises to 35 inches (88.9 cm) and bears pale lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in warmer exposures, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with many large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur and should be managed through cultural or physical controls in typical hosta-growing zones.
