Overview

Registered in 2013 as a sport of a seedling of unknown origin, 'Queen Isabella' is a small, compact hosta distinguished by its intensely twisted and wavy leaves with creamy white margins against medium green centers. The ovate leaves, measuring 3 inches long and 2 inches wide, are lightly cupped and lightly folded, with a dull surface on both sides and a tapered base.

In the Garden

'Queen Isabella' forms a low, mound-like clump reaching 10 inches in diameter and 3 inches in height, with a moderate growth rate. Its small size and variegated foliage make it well suited for the front of shade borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where its twisted leaf texture provides visual interest. Companion plants might include small ferns, miniature epimediums, or fine-textured groundcovers that complement its compact habit.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and snails, which may damage the tender foliage, and site in partial to full shade for best leaf coloration.
