Overview
Registered in 2013 as a seedling of *Hosta* 'Liberty' with unknown pollen parent, 'Quasar' is a giant variegated cultivar notable for its large, broadly ovate leaves with medium green, slightly rippled margins and a moderate growth rate. The leaves measure 14 inches (35.6 cm) long by 13 inches (33.0 cm) wide, feature 13 to 14 vein pairs, and exhibit a cordate base with moderate waviness; both leaf surfaces are slightly shiny.
In the Garden
'Quasar' forms a substantial mound 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall and 37 inches (94.0 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade with consistent moisture, typical of hosta-growing zones. Its large, wavy foliage pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast in texture or bloom color.
Care Notes
Provide regular water during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor; apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor and manage as needed in susceptible gardens.
