Overview

Registered in 2015, *Hosta* 'Quark' is a small-sized variegated cultivar of unknown pollen parentage, with *H.* 'Firefly' as the pod parent. Its visual distinction lies in the combination of medium green, lance-shaped leaves with flat margins, a dull surface on both sides, and a compact, mound-like habit that reaches 10 inches (25.4 cm) in height and 21 inches (53.3 cm) in diameter.

In the Garden

With its moderate growth rate and small stature, 'Quark' is well-suited for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or container plantings where its neat, lanceolate foliage can be appreciated at close range. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs effectively with fine-textured companions such as ferns, heucheras, or small sedges. Its compact dimensions also make it a candidate for trough gardens or mixed shade containers.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Quark' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate deterrents should be considered in areas where these pests are prevalent.
