Overview

Registered in 1999 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, this large hosta cultivar results from a cross between *Hosta kiyosumiensis* and *Hosta pycnophylla*. 'Qualifying Queen' is distinguished by its medium green leaves with slightly rippled margins, a slight sheen on both surfaces, and flat leaf bases, forming a substantial mound-like clump.

In the Garden

'Qualifying Queen' reaches 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 44 inches (111.8 cm) in diameter at maturity, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders alongside ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The lavender scapes, reaching up to 54.6 cm, provide vertical interest above the foliage.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage in typical hosta-growing zones.
