Overview
Registered in 1999 by Japanese breeder H. Sugita, *Hosta* 'Quaker Lady' is a medium-sized cultivar derived from a cross between *H. kiyosumiensis* and *H. pycnophylla*. Its distinguishing features are blue-green leaves with heavy, rippled golden yellow margins and a slightly shiny upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath.
In the Garden
'Quaker Lady' forms a mound-like clump reaching 10.5 inches (26.7 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and is suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover specimen. Its compact size and leaf coloration pair well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitoring and protective measures are advisable in susceptible gardens.
