Overview
Registered in 2002 from the breeding work of F. Maekawa, 'Opipara' is a large hosta forming a dense, slow-growing mound of dark green leaves with creamy white, irregular margins. The leaf surface is slightly glossy above and distinctly shiny beneath, with moderate twisting, folding, and light corrugation contributing to a textured appearance.
In the Garden
'Opipara' reaches a mature spread of approximately 40 inches (101.6 cm) and a height of 19 inches (48.3 cm), with scapes rising 24 to 28.5 inches (61.0 to 72.4 cm) above the foliage. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for variegated hostas, and its substantial size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border. The green and white foliage pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. The thin leaf texture may increase susceptibility to slug damage, and deer browsing is a common concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
