Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Halcyon' registered in 2011, 'On Fire' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves overlaid with large golden yellow streaks and mottled areas, bordered by narrow blue-green margins. The leaf surfaces bear a glaucous bloom on both sides, and the ovate leaves with rounded bases are slightly wavy, with 11 to 12 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
Mature plants form a mound-like clump reaching 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height and 30 inches (76.2 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. The scapes rise 18 to 24 inches (45.7 to 61.0 cm) and are bluish green. This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical of blue-leaved hostas, and its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It combines well with other small hostas or shade-tolerant perennials such as ferns and heucheras.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it may be susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing.
