Overview

Registered in 2014, this giant hosta cultivar resulted from a cross between *H. 'Maekawa'* and *H. 'Abiqua Drinking Gourd'*. Its most distinctive feature is the dense mound of large, unruly, smoky blue-green leaves that appear dull on the upper surface with a glaucous bloom beneath, creating a muted, silvery effect.

In the Garden

'Hosta 'Old Smoky' forms a substantial mound 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter and 27 inches (68.6 cm) tall, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its blue-green foliage maintains its color. The broadly ovate, deeply corrugated leaves with cordate bases and wavy, lightly twisted margins make this an effective specimen or accent plant for woodland gardens and shaded borders. Its large size precludes container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, applying a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Typical slug and deer resistance is moderate; monitor for damage in damp conditions.
