Overview

Registered in 1999, 'Old Hump Back' is a large blue-green hosta derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Frances Williams'. The cultivar is distinguished by its heavily rippled leaf margins and cordate leaf bases, producing a pronounced mound-like habit that gives the plant its common name.

In the Garden

'Old Hump Back' reaches a mature spread of 42 inches (107 cm) and a height of 24 inches (61 cm), forming a dense, rounded mound suitable for mid-border or specimen placement in partial to full shade. Its large, heavily textured leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its blue-green foliage. The green scapes, rising 24 to 26 inches (61 to 66 cm), carry pale lavender flowers in midsummer.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most large-leaved hostas, slug and deer damage may occur; monitor and manage as needed in typical hosta-growing zones.
