Overview

Registered in 2004, 'Old Coot' is a medium-sized variegated hosta resulting from a cross between *Hosta* 'Sum and Substance' (pod parent) and *Hosta yingeri* (pollen parent). The cultivar is distinguished by its very heavy leaf substance, elliptic leaves with green, slightly rippled margins, and a highly glossy surface on both the upper and lower leaf faces.

In the Garden

'Old Coot' forms a mound-like clump reaching 38 inches (96.5 cm) in diameter and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in height, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to dappled shade, typical for variegated hostas, and is suitable for mid-border positions or as a specimen in shaded beds. Its substantial leaf texture pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, particularly in dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The heavy leaf substance offers some resistance to slug damage, though standard slug management is still advisable in damp conditions.
