Overview
Registered in 2009 from unknown parentage, 'Oceans Blue' is a giant blue-green hosta distinguished by its intense blue coloration, which is enhanced by a glaucous bloom on both leaf surfaces, and its notably long petioles. The broadly ovate, moderately cupped leaves measure up to 14.5 inches (36.8 cm) long and 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide, with slightly rippled margins and 13 to 14 vein pairs.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial upright mound reaching 24 inches (61.0 cm) in height and 64 inches (162.6 cm) in diameter at maturity. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas, where the glaucous bloom that produces the blue coloration is best preserved. Its giant size makes it suitable as a specimen plant or as a bold accent in shaded borders, where it pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain consistent soil moisture, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Oceans Blue' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so appropriate protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
