Overview

Registered in 1993 by Walters Gardens, Inc. and introduced by C. Falstad, *Hosta* 'Northern Star' is a large, sport of *H. 'Elegans'* distinguished by its blue-green leaves with chartreuse to gold margins. The leaf blades are cordate, 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide, with 17 to 19 vein pairs and a glaucous bloom on both surfaces.

In the Garden

This cultivar reaches a mature diameter of 46 inches (116.8 cm) and a height of 30 inches (76.2 cm), with scapes of similar height bearing grey-green flowers. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and is well-suited for mid-border or specimen placement. Its substantial size makes it effective as a ground cover or in mass plantings, though it is not recommended for containers due to its large spread.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage foliage; deer are also a potential pest in areas where they browse.
