Overview
Registered in 1988 by C. Falstad, *Hosta* 'Northern Mist' is a sport of *H. 'Elegans'* that produces large, variegated leaves with green centers speckled dark green, bordered by irregular creamy margins. The leaf surface shows some undulation along the margins, and the plant forms a substantial mound reaching 30 inches (76.2 cm) in height and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter.
In the Garden
'Northern Mist' performs best in partial to full shade, where its variegated foliage remains most stable and avoids scorching. The large leaves, measuring 11 inches (27.9 cm) long and 10 inches (25.4 cm) wide with 16 to 18 pairs of veins, create a bold textural presence suitable for mid-border or specimen placement. Companion plants such as ferns, *Heuchera*, or *Astilbe* complement its broad foliage without competing for light.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during establishment and throughout the growing season, particularly in warmer climates. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Northern Mist' may require protection from slugs and deer in garden settings.
