Overview
Registered in 2006 by P. Ruh, this medium-sized variegated hosta of unknown parentage is distinguished by its very shiny, dark green leaves with narrow, slightly rippled margins and sharply pointed leaf tips. The ovate leaves, which measure 8.75 inches (22.2 cm) long and 5.25 inches (13.3 cm) wide, exhibit a flat base and a lightly twisted, lightly wavy, flat profile.
In the Garden
‘Nokogiriyama’ forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 22 inches (55.9 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a slow growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and its glossy foliage provides textural contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or fine-textured grasses. Its compact habit and striking leaf sheen make it suitable for shaded borders, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in a mixed container.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage, so monitor regularly and employ barriers or repellents as needed.
