Overview

Registered in 2006, *Hosta* 'Nippers' is a miniature variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Fascination' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Black Beauty' (pollen parent). Its most distinctive features are the nearly round, deeply corrugated leaves that emerge at a 90-degree angle from the petiole, combined with very dark green flat margins and a slightly shiny upper surface.

In the Garden

With a mature diameter of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and height of 10 inches (25.4 cm), 'Nippers' forms a compact, mound-like clump suitable for the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings. Its miniature stature and proportionate flowers—borne on green scapes 11 to 13 inches (27.9 to 33.0 cm) tall—make it an excellent candidate for container culture. Companion plants should be similarly scaled, such as small ferns or miniature *Heuchera*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, slug and deer damage is possible, though the thick, corrugated leaf texture may offer some resistance.
