Overview
A sport of *Hosta* 'Edge of Night', registered in 2000, 'Night Shades' is a small, upright cultivar distinguished by its blue-green leaves with dark green streaking and slightly rippled margins. The leaves, which reach 6 inches (15.2 cm) in length and 4.75 inches (12.1 cm) in width, exhibit a dull upper surface and a glaucous bloom beneath, with flat leaf bases and ten pairs of veins.
In the Garden
Reaching 9 inches (22.9 cm) in height and 14 inches (35.6 cm) in diameter with a moderate growth rate, 'Night Shades' is well-suited to shaded or partially shaded borders, rock gardens, and container plantings. Its compact size makes it an effective edging plant or ground cover in small spaces, and it pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or shade-tolerant perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Night Shades' is susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
