Overview
Registered in 1998 as a sport of *Hosta* 'Summer Music', 'Nickelodeon' is a large hosta distinguished by its medium green leaves with broad, greenish-yellow margins. The leaves reach 14 inches (35.6 cm) in length and 6.5 inches (16.5 cm) in width, with cordate bases, slightly shiny upper surfaces, and dull undersides; the margins are 2 inches (5.1 cm) wide and slightly rippled, with ten vein pairs per leaf.
In the Garden
'Nickelodeon' grows to a mature clump size of approximately 24 to 30 inches (61.0 to 76.2 cm) in height when in flower, with a spread typical of large hostas. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain most vibrant; in deeper shade, the margins may become greener. This cultivar pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials, and its substantial leaves provide strong textural contrast in woodland borders or mixed shade beds.
Care Notes
Water regularly during dry periods to maintain leaf turgor, and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Nickelodeon' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
