Overview
Registered in 2003 as a sport of an unnamed parent, *Hosta* 'Niagara on the Lake' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its large, ovate leaves with cordate bases, green centers, and flat golden yellow margins. The foliage exhibits unstable yellow streaking and is lightly folded and corrugated, with 13 prominent vein pairs; the leaf surface is slightly shiny above and dull beneath.
In the Garden
This fast-growing hosta forms an upright clump reaching approximately 29 inches (74 cm) in height and 61 inches (155 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or back-of-border plant in partial to full shade. Its substantial leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that complement its bold texture. The tall, branched scapes, which rise 50 to 56 inches (127 to 142 cm) and are green with white streaks, produce lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage, so monitor regularly and use appropriate controls in areas where these pests are prevalent.
