Overview
Registered in 1996 by Carter & Holmes and later registered by C. Plemmons, *Hosta* 'Newberry Gold' is a large, mound-forming cultivar derived from a hybrid of *H.* 'Tokudama Aureonebulosa'. Its most distinctive feature is the broad, yellow-gold margins that contrast with a green leaf center, creating a bold variegated pattern on thick, cordate leaves with a dull surface above and below.
In the Garden
This cultivar forms a substantial mound 18 inches (45.7 cm) tall and 36 inches (91.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain bright without scorching. The large, textured leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade perennials; its size makes it suitable as a specimen or in the middle to back of a shaded border.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs may damage the leaves, particularly in damp conditions, so monitor regularly and manage as needed. Deer resistance is typical for hostas, though not guaranteed.
