Overview

Registered in 1988 by M. Zilis and D. Lohman, ‘New Wave’ is a small hosta resulting from a cross between *H. ‘Sum and Substance’* (pod parent) and a hybrid of *H. venusta* (pollen parent). Its most distinctive feature is the lime green leaf margins, which contrast with the darker green center, a reversal of the typical variegation pattern seen in many hostas.

In the Garden

‘New Wave’ reaches a mature size of 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 25 inches (63.5 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other small shade perennials. Its compact habit also makes it a good candidate for container cultivation.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
