Overview
Registered in 1995, 'New Moon' is a medium-sized hosta cultivar of unknown breeder, produced from a cross between *H.* 'August Clouds' and *H.* 'Fortunei Hyacinthina'. It is visually distinctive for its blue-green leaves with wide, dark green, smooth margins and a yellow-gold center, a color pattern that reverses the typical gold-margined form.
In the Garden
'New Moon' forms a dense, mound-like clump reaching 18 inches (45.7 cm) in height and 40 inches (101.6 cm) in diameter, with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of most hostas, and its medium size makes it suitable for border fronts, woodland gardens, or as a specimen in shaded beds. The broad, cordate leaves with 8 to 10 vein pairs and a glaucous bloom underneath provide textural contrast when paired with ferns, heucheras, or other shade perennials.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many hostas, 'New Moon' is susceptible to slug and deer damage, so protective measures may be necessary in areas where these pests are prevalent.
