Overview
Registered in 2013, this miniature cultivar is a sport of *Hosta* 'Golden Needles', selected for its unusually thick, broadly ovate leaves that display green centers with gold margins and subtle gold speckling. The foliage is dull on both surfaces, with lightly wavy margins and six to eight vein pairs per leaf, creating a dense, mound-like habit.
In the Garden
'Hosta 'Needlepoint' reaches approximately 9.6 inches (24.4 cm) in diameter and 7.1 inches (18.1 cm) in height, forming a compact mound with a fast growth rate. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for gold-margined hostas, and is well suited for rock gardens, troughs, or the front of shaded borders. Its miniature size makes it an excellent candidate for container cultivation, where its thick, speckled leaves provide textural contrast alongside small ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The thick leaves offer moderate resistance to slugs, though standard hosta pest management is advisable in typical hosta-growing zones.
