Overview
Registered in 2009, 'National Treasure' is a miniature sport of a seedling of unknown parentage. This cultivar is visually distinctive for its intensely wavy, ovate leaves with medium to dark green centers and wide, creamy to pure white margins that are flat and measure 0.5 to 0.75 inches (1.3 to 1.9 cm) across. The leaf blades are moderately cupped, moderately twisted, and moderately folded, with a dull surface above and below, and feature 5 to 6 vein pairs.
In the Garden
'National Treasure' forms a compact mound 3.5 inches (8.9 cm) tall and 10 inches (25.4 cm) in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. It is well suited for shaded borders, rock gardens, or container culture due to its miniature size. The upright scapes, reaching 24 to 30 inches (61.0 to 76.2 cm) in height, bear green flowers. Companion plants include other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or dwarf astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from slugs and deer in typical hosta-growing zones.
