Overview
Registered in 2005 from unknown parentage, *Hosta* 'Mr Blue' is a small-sized cultivar distinguished by its heavy glaucous bloom covering both leaf surfaces and the petioles, giving the entire plant a uniform blue-gray appearance. The ovate leaves with flat margins and rounded bases display a blue-green coloration that is enhanced by the waxy bloom, while the deep red-purple petioles provide subtle contrast.
In the Garden
Reaching 12 inches (30.5 cm) in height and 24 inches (61.0 cm) in diameter with a fast growth rate, 'Mr Blue' performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for blue-leaved hostas whose glaucous bloom is most pronounced in reduced light. Its compact size makes it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container plantings, where it pairs well with smaller ferns, heucheras, and woodland groundcovers. The upright habit and moderate leaf dimensions allow it to fit comfortably in mixed shade beds without overwhelming neighboring plants.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry spells, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Mr Blue' is susceptible to slug damage, though the glaucous leaf coating may offer slight resistance; deer browsing remains a potential concern in areas with high deer pressure.
