Overview

Registered in 2012, 'Mountain King' is a large, mound-forming hosta cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Too Darn Hot' as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent. It is visually distinguished by its nearly round leaves with medium green margins, flat bases, and prominent visible veins, combined with good leaf substance.

In the Garden

'Mountain King' reaches a mature size of approximately 28 inches (71.1 cm) in height and 32 inches (81.3 cm) in diameter, forming a dense, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with ferns, heucheras, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its large, substantial leaves make it a suitable specimen for mid-border positions or as a groundcover in shaded beds.

Care Notes

Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, it is susceptible to slug and deer damage and may require protective measures in areas where these pests are prevalent.
