Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, *Hosta* 'Mount Holyoke' is a small-sized cultivar resulting from a cross between seedling #81-9 and *H. 'Halcyon'*. It is visually distinctive for its ovate green leaves with highly variable golden yellow, slightly rippled margins, a slightly shiny upper surface, and dull underside.
In the Garden
This compact hosta forms a mound-like clump with leaves 6 inches (15.2 cm) long and 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as edging. It thrives in partial to full shade, typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns or heucheras. Its small size also makes it appropriate for container cultivation.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. While hostas are generally susceptible to slug and deer damage, 'Mount Holyoke' has no notable resistance; standard protective measures may be necessary in areas with high pest pressure.
