Overview

Registered in 2009 by K. Walek, this small-sized sport of an unnamed parent produces narrowly ovate leaves with yellow centers and blue-green to dark green margins. The 1-inch-wide margins contrast sharply with the bright gold leaf centers, creating a distinct bicolor effect on a compact, mound-forming plant.

In the Garden

Reaching 10 inches in height and 24 inches in diameter with a medium to fast growth rate, 'Moonstruck' performs best in partial shade to filtered sun, where the gold center coloration remains brightest. Its small stature suits the front of shaded borders, rock gardens, or trough plantings, and pairs well with other small hostas, ferns, or low-growing shade perennials such as *Heuchera* or *Tiarella*. The compact mound also adapts readily to container culture.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture during the growing season and apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as with most hostas, though the thick leaf margins may offer some resistance to minor slug feeding.
