Overview
Registered in 1996, *Hosta* 'Moongate Flying Saucer' is a small blue-green cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Serendipity' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Blue Blazes' (pollen parent). Its visual distinction arises from long petioles that elevate the ovate, lightly cupped leaves, giving the clump the appearance of an African violet.
In the Garden
This small hosta reaches approximately 11 inches (27.9 cm) in height and spreads to 22 inches (55.9 cm) in diameter, forming a moderate-growing, mound-like clump. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical of hosta-growing zones, and its compact size makes it suitable for rock gardens, woodland edges, or the front of a shaded border. The blue-green foliage pairs well with fine-textured companions such as ferns or heucheras.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain even moisture, particularly during dry spells. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. The leaves are moderately susceptible to slug damage; standard slug control measures may be necessary in damp conditions. Deer may browse the foliage.
