Overview
Registered in 1995 as a sport of an unnamed parent, 'Monument Circle' is a large, mound-forming hosta distinguished by its variegated foliage: a broad, dark green leaf center is bordered by a narrow (0.5 in / 1.3 cm), light green margin. The leaves are cordate at the base, slightly shiny above and dull beneath, with 10 to 11 pairs of veins.
In the Garden
'Monument Circle' reaches a mature spread of 24 inches (61.0 cm) and a height of 12 inches (30.5 cm), forming a dense, moderate-growing mound. It performs best in partial to full shade, as typical for hostas, and is suitable for borders, woodland gardens, or as a groundcover beneath deciduous trees. Its large, variegated leaves pair well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. The green scapes, rising 12 to 24 inches (30.5 to 61.0 cm) tall, bear lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, protect from deer and monitor for slug damage, particularly in damp conditions.
