Overview
Registered in 2007, *Hosta* 'Montreal Blue Ice Storm' is a giant cultivar resulting from a cross between two seedlings of *Hosta* 'Elegans'. It is distinguished by its intensely blue-green, broadly ovate leaves that reach 19 inches in length and 16 inches in width, with a glaucous bloom on both surfaces, slightly rippled margins, and a blunt-pointed tip.
In the Garden
This cultivar performs best in partial to full shade, typical for blue-leaved hostas, where its glaucous bloom is best preserved. At maturity, it forms a substantial mound 60 inches in diameter and 42 inches tall, with scapes rising 36 to 48 inches bearing green flowers in midsummer. Its large scale makes it suitable as a specimen or as a backdrop for smaller perennials such as ferns or *Heuchera*; it is not suited for containers due to its giant size.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during establishment, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and may require management in damp conditions; deer browsing is also a potential concern in typical hosta-growing zones.
