Overview
Registered in 2011, *Hosta* 'Monochrome' is a solid-colored sport of *Hosta* 'Kaleidochrome', notable for its reversal of the typical hosta variegation pattern: green leaf centers with gold margins, rather than the gold centers and green margins of its parent. This small cultivar forms a compact, slow-growing mound with ovate leaves that are moderately wavy and slightly shiny on both surfaces.
In the Garden
'Monochrome' reaches a mature diameter of 12 inches (30.5 cm) and a height of 5 inches (12.7 cm), making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or as an edging plant. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the gold margins remain distinct without scorching. Its small size and slow growth rate make it an excellent candidate for container culture or trough gardens. Companion plants include ferns, heucheras, and other small woodland perennials that share similar shade requirements.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, particularly during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most hostas, 'Monochrome' is susceptible to slug and deer damage; monitor regularly and apply appropriate controls if needed.
