Overview
Registered in 2009 by K. Walek of the American Hosta Society, *Hosta* 'Monitor' is a giant-sized variegated cultivar of unknown parentage. It is visually distinctive for its heavily corrugated, dark green leaves with wide, deeply rippled margins, a combination that gives the foliage a textured, sculptural appearance.
In the Garden
With a mature spread of 40 inches (101.6 cm) and height of 34 inches (86.4 cm), 'Monitor' is suited to the middle or back of a shaded border, where its large, semi-upright leaves can be appreciated. It performs best in partial to full shade and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials. Its substantial size makes it unsuitable for containers.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like most large-leaved hostas, 'Monitor' may be susceptible to slug and deer damage in typical hosta-growing zones.
