Overview

Registered in 2005 by an unknown breeder, *Hosta* 'Mona Lisa' is a large, mound-forming cultivar distinguished by its heavily rippled, corrugated leaves with medium green margins and a dull upper surface. The leaves are nearly round with a cordate base, measure 11 inches (27.9 cm) long by 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide, and exhibit 11 pairs of veins; the underside is slightly shiny. The plant produces green scapes reaching 33 inches (83.8 cm) in height.

In the Garden

'Mona Lisa' forms a substantial mound 30 inches (76.2 cm) tall and 60 inches (152.4 cm) in diameter, making it suitable as a specimen or focal point in shaded borders and woodland gardens. It performs best in partial to full shade, where its corrugated, contorted leaves are less prone to scorching. Companion plants that appreciate similar conditions include ferns, *Heuchera*, and *Astilbe*.

Care Notes

Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage the foliage; monitor regularly and use appropriate controls if needed. This cultivar is hardy in typical hosta-growing zones.
