Overview
Registered in 2001 by P. & J. Ruh, 'Mirth' is a small hosta cultivar derived from *Hosta* 'Happiness' as the pod parent, with an unknown pollen parent. Its distinctive variegation consists of light green leaves with green veins and medium green, slightly rippled margins that vary from 0.25 to 1 inch (0.6 to 2.5 cm) in width, creating an unusual pattern where the veins remain green rather than matching the lighter leaf center.
In the Garden
'Mirth' forms a slow-growing, mound-like clump reaching 8.5 inches (21.6 cm) in height and 13.5 inches (34.3 cm) in diameter, making it suitable for the front of borders, rock gardens, or container culture. It performs best in partial to full shade, as is typical for hostas, and pairs well with other small shade perennials such as ferns, heucheras, or miniature epimediums. Its compact size and slow growth rate make it an excellent choice for trough gardens or small woodland settings.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture during the growing season, applying a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. As with most hostas, monitor for slug and deer damage, particularly in shaded, moist locations.
