Overview
Registered in 1995 by J. & J. Wilkins, *Hosta* 'Millennium' is a giant cultivar distinguished by its intensely blue-green, glaucous leaves with slightly rippled margins and cordate bases. The substantial foliage, reaching 17 inches in length and 14 inches in width with 14 vein pairs, emerges with a semi-upright habit and maintains a powdery bloom on both surfaces.
In the Garden
This slow-growing giant forms a clump 54 inches in diameter and 36 inches in height, making it suitable as a specimen or background plant in shaded borders. It performs best in partial to full shade, where the blue-green coloration is most pronounced, and pairs well with ferns, astilbes, and other shade-tolerant perennials that contrast with its broad leaves. The green scapes, rising 45 to 50 inches, bear pale lavender flowers in midsummer.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer in early spring as growth emerges. Standard slug and deer precautions are advisable, as both pests may damage the foliage.
