Overview
Registered in 1991 by P. Ruh and W. Zumbar, *Hosta* 'Miki' is a large cultivar derived from a cross between *Hosta* 'Hirao Majesty' (pod parent) and *Hosta* 'Hirao Supreme' (pollen parent). It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with medium yellow, slightly undulating margins and its substantial dimensions.
In the Garden
'Miki' forms a clump approximately 33 inches (83.8 cm) in diameter and 13 inches (33.0 cm) in height, placing it in the large size class. It is suitable for partial to full shade in typical hosta-growing zones, where its broad, cordate-based leaves (up to 11.5 inches long and 8.5 inches wide) provide strong textural contrast. Companion plants such as ferns, astilbes, or other shade-tolerant perennials complement its bold foliage; it is not recommended for container cultivation due to its size.
Care Notes
Water regularly to maintain consistent soil moisture, especially during dry periods. Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Slugs and deer may damage foliage; monitor and manage as needed.
