Overview
Registered in 1969 by V. Cooley, 'Midwest Gold' is a large hosta derived from a hybrid of *Hosta* 'Frances Williams'. It is visually distinctive for its green leaves with gold margins, a reverse coloration pattern compared to its parent, and its substantial leaf size.
In the Garden
'Midwest Gold' reaches a mature diameter of 30 inches (76.2 cm) and a height of 20 inches (50.8 cm), with leaves 12 inches (30.5 cm) long and 9 inches (22.9 cm) wide. It performs best in partial to full shade, typical for gold-margined hostas, and benefits from protection from hot afternoon sun to prevent leaf scorch. Its large size makes it suitable as a specimen or in mixed shade borders with ferns and astilbes.
Care Notes
Provide consistent moisture, especially during dry periods, and apply a balanced fertilizer in early spring as new growth emerges. Like many large-leaved hostas, it is susceptible to slug damage and deer browsing.
