Overview

Registered in 2004, *Hosta* 'Midnight Oil' is a small-sized variegated cultivar resulting from a cross between *H.* 'Potomac Pride' (pod parent) and *H.* 'Neat Splash Rim' (pollen parent). It is distinguished by its thick, very dark green leaves with a pronounced glossy sheen on both surfaces, a trait that gives the plant its name.

In the Garden

*Hosta* 'Midnight Oil' forms a compact, upright mound reaching approximately 15 inches in height and 26 inches in diameter, with a moderate growth rate. Its leaves are elliptic with tapered bases, measuring 6.5 inches long and 4.5 inches wide, and feature 6 to 7 vein pairs, flat dark green margins, and a lightly corrugated, lightly folded texture. The deep, shiny foliage provides strong contrast when paired with plants bearing lighter green, chartreuse, or silver foliage, such as ferns, heucheras, or pulmonarias. This cultivar is well-suited for the front of a shaded border, rock gardens, or container culture, where its glossy leaves can be appreciated at close range. It performs best in partial to full shade, as excessive sun may scorch the leaves.

Care Notes

*Hosta* 'Midnight Oil' requires consistently moist, well-drained soil and benefits from regular watering during dry periods. Standard hosta care applies: apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring, and monitor for slugs and snails, which may damage the foliage; deer pressure is also a potential concern. Hardiness zones are typical for the genus, and the plant thrives in USDA zones 3 through 9.
